Prior to 2013, the Lagos State Secretariat complex’s source of power was a combination of intermittent electricity supplied by the grid as well as self generation via diesel engines. The secretariat, which houses the offices of the Governor and Deputy Governor of Lagos State, the State House of Assembly and all state ministries, sought a more cost effective and reliable energy source to increase staff productivity and portray a more compelling image of the state.
Hence Alausa Power Limited (“ALPL”) was established to develop and operate a 10.6MW independent power plant and supply power to the Secretariat via a ten year power purchase agreement executed in 2011. The project began commercial operations in 2013. Elektron completed the acquisition of ALPL in 2017and is now wholly owned.
The plant is located in Alausa, Ikeja and generates power via two (3.6MW) gas engines and two (2.0MW) diesel engines. ALPL is supported by a 5km radial distribution network. The plant is currently undergoing an expansion development to increase capacity to 30MW and the distribution network to 15KM over two phases.
